Intro

Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam, and today, we are soaring up into the highest, fog-enshrouded mountain peaks and cloud-woven fortresses of Krynn to explore the most ethereal and tragically beautiful of the metallic dragons—the Silver Dragons. I’d like to take a moment and thank the DLSaga members, and invite you to consider becoming a member—you can even pick up Dragonlance media or get $10 by signing up to StartPlaying.Games using my affiliate links. Like starlight reflecting off a quiet pond, silver dragons radiate a breathtaking, otherworldly beauty. From a distance, they appear less like scaly reptiles and more like living dragonmetal—fluid, serene, and majestic, with powerful muscles sending gentle ripples beneath their metallic skin as they move through the skies. Their skulls are narrow and tapered, ending in a sharp, curved beak that gives them an aristocratic profile. Silvers possess two long horns curving from the back of their heads, with a large, striking crest rising between them that extends halfway down the neck before seamlessly disappearing.

Lean-framed and graceful, silver dragons rarely surpass 120 feet in total length. Their slender builds make them exceptionally swift flyers, capable of executing breathtaking maneuvers high above the clouds. Their scales possess a mirror-like silver luster that mirrors the sky, making them virtually invisible when soaring through heavy mist and high-altitude cumulus clouds.

Creatures of frost, fog, and high altitudes, silver dragons traditionally build their homes on the highest, fog-enshrouded mountain peaks of Ansalon. Because these towering aeries naturally overlap with the territory of the massive, aggressive red dragons, the silver clan developed a brilliant adaptation: they build their lairs amongst the clouds themselves using inherent high-magic abilities. Sculpting homes entirely out of water vapor and invisible walls of force, silver dragons float above their enemies, keeping a silent, watchful eye on the world below. Following the defeat of the Overlord Gellidus in Southern Ergoth, many silvers have tried reclaiming sacred sites near Huma’s Tomb, establishing new lairs in regions recently vacated by white dragons.

However, the most defining chapter in modern silver dragon history is rooted in profound grief. Because silver dragons were uniquely close to the Platinum Father, Paladine, his voluntary surrender of divinity during the War of Souls shattered their emotional core. Crippled by deep shame that they could not prevent his sacrifice, many silvers have lost emotional control. Some launch reckless, suicidal attacks against anything registering as evil; others cower in their lairs, paralyzed by fear that the remaining gods will punish them for their failure. Rumors even persist of a deeply disturbed silver trying to ‘reclaim’ corrupted draconians back to their pure, pre-corruption state.

Most traumatized silvers, however, chose a path of humble penance. They have assumed elven disguises to follow Valthonis across Ansalon, or joined knightly orders in the footsteps of Silvara, working tirelessly to heal the ravaged land and hoping their collective sacrifice might somehow coax Paladine back to his rightful place.

Psychologically, silver dragons are a species caught in deep crisis. Where they once faced adversaries with unwavering confidence, today’s silvers are plagued by doubt, startle easily, and occasionally lash out when disturbed. In combat, their trauma can cause them to freeze up, making them dangerously vulnerable unless anchored by close mortal bonds—such as the Solamnic Knights who share a telepathic and emotional link with their silver mounts.

Because of this turbulent worldview, silvers view current geopolitics in stark, black-and-white terms. Traditional allies like elves and knighthoods have suffered setbacks, while minotaurs and ogres rise in power. Unaffected silvers take to covert action, forming elite knightly squadrons to purge the Desolation and Ergoth of lingering Overlord forces, while launching joint military campaigns alongside the merchant guilds of Tarsis to clear out goblins and Dark Knights from Qualinesti and restore vital trade routes.

Socially, silvers maintain loosely knit clans led by the eldest family member, uniting only in times of extreme crisis. Their fundamental societal building block is the nuclear family: silver dragons mate for life and remain together long after their offspring reach maturity. Honoring ancient legends of the patriarch Darlantan and Kagonos, the father of the Kagonesti elves, many silver families act as lifelong protectors to specific human and elven family lines, bestowing heirloom tokens of protection passed down through generations.

The annals of Ansalon feature some of the most romantic, tragic, and legendary figures in draconic history:

Tianaran: The ancient first silver dragon and progenitor of the clan, who perished in a brutal, coordinated ambush by the newly born chromatic dragons.

El’liolle (Heart): The courageous silver dragon who fell deeply in love with the legendary Solamnic Knight Huma during the Third Dragon War, fighting bravely at his side before dying from injuries sustained in Huma’s final, fateful duel against Takhisis.

D’argent (Silvara): One of the most famous silver dragons in history. Breaking the sacred oaths of good dragons, she fought in the War of the Lance disguised as an elven maiden, sharing a tragic, enduring romance with Gilthanas that echoed the doomed love of Heart and Huma. After helping overthrow the Overlord Gellidus, she returned to self-exile on the Dragon Isles following Gilthanas’s death.

Darlantan Hornbearer: The silver dragon who befriended Kagonos Pathfinder in the First Dragon War. His heroic death and deep bond with Kagonos inspired the Kagonesti elves to forge their own distinct identity.

Solomirathnius (Mirror): A magnificent great wyrm who served as the dedicated defender of the Citadel of Light. Struck blind after refusing the call of the Great Storm, Mirror partnered with the blue dragon Razor to guide Tasslehoff and Gerard in restoring the metallic dragons and defeating the One God during the War of Souls.

And finally, Dargentan (Gentan): The current patriarch of the silver dragon clan and son of Lectral. Wielding the sacred Ram’s Horn of the Elderwild, Gentan guides the healing and rebuilding of the weakened silver dragon clan while his twin brother, Lant, trains the next generation on the Dragon Isles.
