Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam, and today, we are diving deep beneath the rolling waves of Krynn’s oceans to explore the most elusive, beautiful, and playful of all dragonkind—the Aquatic Dragons. For ages, these bioluminescent serpents lived in blissful, secluded isolation at the north pole of Krynn in their pristine ice citadel of Saturnalia, entirely oblivious to the surface world’s wars. But following the War of Souls and a devastating invasion by the sea dragon Urchin, these curious, songbird-voiced dragons have migrated south to populate the seas surrounding Ansalon. From their museum-like lairs inside sunken shipwrecks to their deep reverence for Habbakuk the Fisher, these oceanic guardians have captured the imaginations of sailors and kender alike.

Aquatic dragons are arguably the most stunning and colorful serpents to ever swim the seas of Krynn, sporting sleek, streamlined bodies designed for supreme aquatic agility. Instead of traditional wings—which they have no use for in the deep—they are heavily fringed with delicate, multi-hued leafy frills tinged with electric shades of bright red, purple, yellow, green, and blue. At the dragon’s command, these decorative frills can shimmer with brilliant bioluminescent radiance, illuminating the inky darkness of the ocean depths. Their scales form broad, striking tiger-stripes of electric green, blue, and purple, while their eyes shine with a blazing cobalt or azure light.

An aquatic dragon’s head features a long, elongated snout similar to a sea horse’s that tapers to a nearly cylindrical tip, housing deep rows of small, sharp teeth capable of delivering a nasty bite. Their limbs end in pale green, webbed claws that provide exceptional maneuvering grace, and their sweet, melodious voices sound remarkably like singing songbirds. Their sinuous tails are immensely strong and dexterous, serving as both anchors against strong ocean currents and formidable weapons. Uniquely, male aquatic dragons feature specialized pouch-like flaps along their tails—used affectionately to haul their young wyrmlings around for a thrilling ride, or to salvage heavy treasures from sunken ships.

For ages, aquatic dragons made their home at the extreme north pole of Krynn in a hidden polar sanctuary known as Saturnalia, thriving in pristine ice caves carved from the underbelly of polar glaciers, illuminated by thousands of luminescent deep-sea fish. However, after the War of Souls, an unstoppable sea dragon named Urchin marauded north, threatening their sacred refuge. Though the god Habbakuk himself intervened to defeat Urchin, her dying curse forever tainted the region, leading the aquatic dragons to rename the freezing north ‘Saturnine’—the poisoned place—and sparking a massive southward migration into the warmer seas surrounding Ansalon.

When establishing new homes in the south, aquatic dragons prefer dark sea-bottom caverns or the cavernous hulls of sunken pirate galleons. They use their mighty tails to salvage shipwrecks, towing them back to serve as the foundations for their lairs. An aquatic dragon treats its lair like a floating museum, artfully decorating the hull with briny anchors, waterlogged sails, and magical artifacts salvaged from the surface world, spending countless hours studying human and elven history. As filter-feeders when small, mature aquatics feed on massive swarms of plankton, krill, and shrimp by swimming with their jaws parted, though they will happily graze on kelp and barnacles before ever harming larger marine life.

Psychologically, aquatic dragons are playful, solitary, and intensely curious, often embarking on eccentric, winding journeys along the seabed that make them lose track of time. They delight in whimsical joy and love mingling with marine life, but beneath their lighthearted demeanor lies a fierce, unyielding warrior spirit. When defending a coral reef, a whale-mother giving birth, or their beloved sea-elf allies, aquatic dragons transform into terrifying combatants.

Opening a fight underwater, an aquatic dragon unleashes a thick, blinding cloud of chilling, strength-draining ink that confuses opponents and saps their vigor. Combined with spell-like abilities that create walls of torrential water, cast invisibility, or allow the dragon to polymorph into an inconspicuous sea snake or starfish, they can easily confound enemies while making a clean getaway. If forced into physical combat, they rely on sharp bites, claw swipes, and crushing tail constrictions. Spiritually, aquatic dragons revere Habbakuk above all, knowing him as Abbuku the Fisher. They view every creature of the sea as a reflection of his divine likeness, driving them to fiercely protect marine harmony against despoilers like Zeboim’s worshippers and aggressive kuo-toa.

Reclusive by nature, aquatic dragons are slowly forming deep bonds with benevolent sea races during the Age of Mortals, particularly the Dargonesti and Dimernesti elves, who show them proper reverence. They also interact with merfolk, ocean striders, and sea giants, often maintaining their true identity hidden by assuming the shape of a colorful talking sea horse, a cheerful dolphin, or a vibrant sea snake when meeting surface-faring sailors. While they easily outsmart creatures like aboleths and dragon turtles, they remain deeply wary of territorial sea dragons.

The history of Krynn’s oceans is forever marked by the selfless acts of individual aquatic dragons:

Anhalstrax: A courageous aquatic dragon who aided the Dargonesti elf Apoletta and her companions during the Age of Mortals. Facing the terrifying fire dragon Blazewight, Anhalstrax martyred herself to ensure the heroes could escape and seal the portals of Chaos, saving Krynn’s oceans from toxic poisoning.

And Anemone: A playful and vain young adult aquatic dragon residing in the Schallsea Straits of the New Sea. Anemone partnered with a human mystic named Marencetta, forming an inseparable duo dedicated to protecting vital shipping lanes from rampaging dragon turtles.
