Intro

Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam, and today, we are heading into the steep foothills and labyrinthine low mountain passes of Krynn to explore the most crusty, independent, and wildly entertaining of the metallic dragons—the Copper Dragons. I’d like to take a moment and thank the DLSaga members and Patreon patrons, and invite you to consider becoming a member or patron — you can even pick up Dragonlance media or get $10 by signing up to StartPlaying.Games using my affiliate links. Because they spend so much of their lives navigating tight, subterranean cave systems, copper dragons are remarkably sleek, slender, and smooth. Reaching lengths of up to 95 feet when fully mature, their blunted physical features give them an almost seamless appearance. From a distance, a resting copper looks less like a scaly reptile and more like a statue cast from solid, molten metal. Up close, their individual scales are so tightly fitted that they are virtually impossible to distinguish from one another.

While young coppers feature scales of a bright, radiant reddish-gold hue, older dragons develop dark green flecks across their hides, creating a mottled verdigris patina. When a copper moves, its powerful musculature ripples like liquid waves beneath its skin. Their skulls are crowned with two long, blunt horns extending straight back from the head, while a ridge of thin, razor-sharp spines runs along the length of their spine down to the tail. These blunted facial contours and streamlined bodies make them exceptional burrowers and subterranean sprinters.

With the soaring peaks claimed by silver and red dragons, and the low plains held by brasses and blues, coppers occupy a precarious middle ground in the rocky foothills. Secretive to an extreme, they delve intricate, narrow cave networks featuring complex mazes, false turns, and dead ends. To safeguard their hoards from rival red dragons, coppers cover their lair entrances with elaborate magical and physical traps—a defense mechanism that perfectly mirrors their mischievous nature.

Because their territories directly overlap with dangerous red wyrms, coppers rely on extreme stealth and camouflage. While a copper will never challenge a larger red dragon in a direct head-on brawl, their stubborn pride prevents them from fleeing. Instead, they wage relentless campaigns of guerrilla harassment—nico-tipping, dropping boulders, setting off traps, and taunting their massive enemies into reckless mistakes. In peaceful times, coppers hunt mountain goats and sheep, though they aren’t above stealing kills from neighboring coppers purely as payback for pranks gone wrong. Tragically, because coppers threw themselves into the frontlines of every major dragon war and fought the alien Dragon Overlords with unyielding fury, they suffered catastrophic casualties during the Dragon Purge, leaving them with the smallest population of all dragonkind.

Copper dragons possess a unique, mercurial cocktail of personality traits. They are crusty, irascible, and quick to anger, yet they are also compulsive jokers and pranksters who crave external appreciation for their humor. On good days, a copper is a delight—cracking jokes, pulling pranks, and demanding compensation in laughs or gold. However, if an audience fails to appreciate their wit, a copper’s mood rapidly sours, driving them to throw a huff or turn their pranks into vicious, painful tricks. In combat, coppers relentlessly insult and mock their foes, weaponizing taunts much like a Kender.

Coppers are fiercely independent loners who live on their own schedule. Once a copper has had enough social interaction, it immediately retires to its lair; anyone who persists in bugging them will face harsh retaliation, regardless of how friendly they were moments prior. Interestingly, coppers get along best with Kender and Gnomes. Kender endlessly amuse coppers with absurd stories and new jokes, giving rise to legendary taunting duels between coppers and Kender that have lasted for weeks at a time! Gnomes, meanwhile, delight coppers simply by existing—the sheer absurdity of over-engineered gnomish gadgets failing to work sends copper dragons into rolling fits of laughter.

In terms of social structure, coppers rarely meet except to mate, splitting up as soon as their store of mutual jokes runs dry. Religiously, while they venerate the Light, coppers historically felt the gods’ goals differed from their own. However, in the modern age, the god Habbakuk has taken a special interest in helping the remaining coppers repopulate, recognizing their crucial ecological role in checking red dragon aggression.

Despite their small population, the copper dragon clan boasts some of the most storied figures in Ansalon’s history:

Querrasian: The legendary progenitor of the copper clan, who fought in the world’s dawn before being tragically slain when the Sons of Takhisis ambushed her.

Blayze: Son of Querrasian and grandfather of Cymbol, a brave old wyrm who fell during the First Dragon War fighting the red dragon matriarch Crematia.

Cymbol: A former patriarch of the copper clan and one of the first metallic dragons to carry Knights of Solamnia into battle wielding true dragonlances in the Third Dragon War. He fought in the War of the Lance before falling heroically while challenging the massive Dragon Overlord Malystryx.

Shatraklangg (Clang): The current matriarch of the copper clan. After losing all her wyrmlings to Beryllinthranox during the Dragon Purge, she spent years hiding in the Wayreth Forest studying the green Overlord. Today, Clangg serves as the guardian of the Bastion, the planar observatory for the Orders of High Sorcery.

Yazzlyn (Lyon): The current patriarch of the copper dragon clan and son of Cymbol. A veteran of the War of the Lance, Lyon currently resides on the island of Jaentarth in the Dragon Isles, where he personally trains the next generation of young male coppers to ensure the survival of his species.
