Green Dragons of Krynn

Hidden deep within the canopies of Nordmaar and the blighted forests of Qualinesti, Green Dragons are the most sly, manipulative, and paranoia-driven chromatics on Krynn. Today, we break down the unique physiology and psychological cunning of Krynn’s serpent-like wyrms. Discover how their hornless heads, elongated necks, and toxic chlorine breath make them lethal ambush predators that prefer ruining their victims’ minds over direct combat. We also explore their dark history with the elves, their secret shapeshifting political plots, their hidden contempt for Takhisis, and the legacy of legendary figures like Cyan Bloodbane, Beryllinthranox (Beryl), and Parcianyx. A green dragon rarely bothers to tear you apart with its claws—it would much rather cast a mind-affecting spell, trick you into destroying your own life, and patiently wait around to claim your treasure after the dust settles.

Intro

Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam, and today we are venturing under the sunless canopies of Ansalon’s dense forests to unravel the cunning mind, serpentine anatomy, and insidious politics of Green Dragons. I’d like to take a moment and thank the DLSaga members and Patreon patrons, and invite you to consider becoming a member or patron — you can even pick up Dragonlance media or get $10 by signing up to StartPlaying.Games using my affiliate links. To truly understand green dragons, you have to realize that their physical appearance sets them apart from every other chromatic dragon on Krynn. Uniquely, green dragons have no horns at all until they reach a very advanced age, giving them a smooth, serpentine look that has inspired legends of winged snakes among the tribal peoples of Nordmaar and Throtl. They feature small, streamlined heads with short snouts, tiny earflaps, and a prominent dorsal fin that runs from the middle of their forehead down to their tail, reaching its highest peak along the neck. As they age into full adulthood, a small rhinoceros-like nose horn finally emerges, though it rarely exceeds four to six inches. Their scales are small, tightly bound, and smooth to the touch, resembling the skin of a garden snake.

Reaching maximum lengths of around eighty-five to ninety feet, a huge portion of that length is made up of their unusually long, sinuous neck and tail. That extra-long neck serves a vital ecological purpose in dense woodland habitats: it allows a green dragon to peer over the treetops without needing to take flight. Flying over their own territory carries a distinct risk because their chlorine gas breath weapon defoliates trees and rots plant life. Using that breath weapon under a forest canopy can ruin the very woodland they call home, and it spoils any prey they intend to eat. Because of this, green dragons hunt without their breath weapon whenever possible, though the heavy, unmistakable scent of chlorine permeates their entire territory regardless.

Ecologically, green dragons dominate the deep jungles and forests of Ansalon, particularly in Nordmaar, the Woods of Lahue, and the historic woods of Qualinesti. Their lairs evolve as they age. Young greens weave living branches and boughs together high in the forest canopy to build elevated hunting platforms where they can spy on the forest floor. As they grow too large for the trees, they move down to secluded glades, using subtle illusions and magic to hide their burrows and caves. They are intensely paranoid, territorial loners who deploy telepathic wyvern patrols to alert them the second any sentient creature steps foot into their domain.

Psychologically, green dragons are smug, arrogant, and deeply xenophobic. They view themselves as intellectually superior to all other creatures, including other dragons. Rather than engaging in direct combat, a green dragon prefers to manipulate others through trickery, legalistic loopholes, and mind-affecting magic. Following the Chaos War, many greens adopted the spellcasting methods of Cyan Bloodbane, using mind control to ruin enemies from afar. While inherently lawful, they despise being grouped together with their own kind. If forced to coexist, tensions rapidly boil over into internal power struggles unless held in check by a truly terrifying leader like a Dragon Overlord.

This sinister psychology heavily shapes their race relations. Greens despise mortal races and only serve greater evils when coerced by superior force. In recent years, following the deaths of Cyan Bloodbane and the Dragon Overlord Beryl, green dragons have developed a burning vendetta against elves. In Silvanesti, greens allied with minotaur invaders to hunt elven rebels, while in Nordmaar, they act as ruthless jungle cult lords, demanding young maidens as sacrifices from local villagers. Some enterprising greens have even begun shapeshifting into humans or ogres, infiltrating political circles in Khur and Kharolis as shadowy advisors to sway factions against elven survivors.

Religiously, green dragons held a shockingly cynical attitude toward Takhisis. While they offered groveling, pious praise to her face, they mocked her behind her back and sneered at her constantly failing schemes. When the Dark Queen ultimately fell, the greens felt vindicated in their own superiority, taking her demise as proof of their own brilliance. In the power void following her death, Hiddukel, the Prince of Lies, has stepped in to cultivate the greens, finding their deceitful, manipulative nature to be the perfect vessel for his divine interests.

Several green dragons stand out as absolute titans in Krynn’s history. Korril was the firstborn ancestor of the clan who perished in the Age of Dreams when Aurora ripped out his throat. Sthenn was a villainous wyrm of that same ancient age who waged a continent-spanning war against the bronze dragon Duranix. In modern times, Lorrinar, also known as Fume, was an alien dragon who claimed the Woods of Lahue before vanishing after the War of Souls. Parcianyx, known as Poison, is an ancient veteran of the Third Dragon War and the War of the Lance who currently plots from the borders of Silvanesti, preparing to step out of retirement to lead the clan.

Then, of course, there are the two most infamous green dragons to ever terrorize Krynn. Beryllinthranox, known simply as Beryl, was the massive Dragon Overlord who conquered Qualinesti, altered the landscape, and hunted relentlessly for the Tower of High Sorcery before being brought down by Laurana in a battle that destroyed Qualinost and created the Lake of Death. And finally, Cyan Bloodbane, the student of Galan Dracos who trapped King Lorac in the horrific Nightmare of Silvanesti, served Raistlin Majere, and manipulated political powers for generations before falling to Mina in the War of Souls.
