Gold dragons are the absolute largest, most radiant dragons native to the world of Krynn, easily growing up to an astounding 150 feet in total length. Under any light source, their massive bodies cast a luminous, brilliant glow that gives them the illusion of moving, liquid gold from a distance. Their hide consists of thick, interlocking plates of solid metallic gold, specially ridged along the edges to vent trapped moisture close to their skin during flight and deep subterranean rest.
A gold dragon’s skull is long, broad, and pointed, crowned by two massive ivory horns and pronounced, sweep-back ear flaps. As a gold dragon matures across the centuries, long, graceful whiskers droop from its lower jaws—uncannily resembling the iconic, drooping moustaches of Solamnic Knights or ancient freshwater catfish. A continuous row of sharp, triangular crest plates traces their dorsal ridge from the crown of their head all the way down to the tip of their sweeping tail. While hatchlings begin life with bright, yellow-gold scales, their hides steadily darken into a rich, deep metallic sheen as they age into ancient grandeur.
As the supreme creations of the Light, gold dragons have virtually no environmental limitations regarding where they make their homes. While many reside in the legendary crystal city of Auralastican on Misty Isle or roam the surrounding grassy plains, golds can be found across the length and breadth of Krynn. Their only firm requirement for a lair is that it be constructed of sturdy, carved stone and built large enough to comfortably accommodate their massive draconic bodies, vast treasure hoards, and extensive research libraries. Some have commandeered abandoned, ancient castles, while others established a major military stronghold in the crystal city of Claran Elian during the terrifying reign of the red dragon Overlord Malystryx to monitor her movements.
In Palanthas, gold dragons maintain a heavily fortified, secret manor built directly over a vast cavern network. Operating disguised as ordinary humans or elves, golds used this secret safehouse as a major operational hub for the underground resistance fighting against Dark Knight control in Solamnia. In fact, most gold dragons actively prefer staying in human or elven forms for decades at a time, finding it far easier to handle delicate magic scrolls, leather-bound books, and laboratory equipment with humanoid hands rather than giant draconic claws. By adopting mortal diets, they bypass the need to hunt local game entirely, allowing them to seamlessly integrate into high society as scholars, university researchers, information brokers, and high-level political advisors working behind the scenes to heal a broken continent.
Gold dragons are orderly, deeply philosophical beings who measure every decision with rigorous, unemotional logic. They are never quick to pass judgment; when faced with a complex ethical choice, a gold dragon will wander the world for months to survey mortals from all walks of life—even granting evil creatures a fair opportunity to state their case freely. They hold tremendous respect for the elderly of any species, listening intently to their accumulated wisdom. When good mortals are in need, golds step in without expecting any reward or recompense, often using extensive proxy networks to provide aid covertly if direct action might cause wider political panic.
Socially, gold dragons operate under a rigid hierarchy based strictly on the noble bloodlines of Aurora, the first gold dragon. Mating requires formal council approval in Auralastican to preserve bloodline registers and historical accuracy. The entire dragonflight is ruled by a mated pair—King Aurumnus and Queen Regia—who govern through a massive administrative organization that rivals the Great Library of Palanthas in sheer efficiency. Religiously, golds were crushed by Paladine sacrificing his godhood at the end of the War of Souls, but they viewed it as the ultimate noble sacrifice. In honor of ancient pacts, seven young adult gold dragons swore sacred oaths to guard Paladine’s mortal incarnation, Valthonis, remaining permanently in elven form until their beloved god’s divinity is restored.
The historical record of Krynn is filled with legendary gold dragons who shaped the fate of the entire world:
Aurora: The legendary Daughter of Paladine and progenitor of the gold dragon clan. She gave her life defending the sacred grotto, single-handedly defeating all five Sons of Takhisis in a legendary, catastrophic battle.
Aurican: An ancient wyrm who fought in the Second Dragon War. Alongside the three legendary elven brother-mages, Aurican helped discover fundamental mortal magic and breathed magical essence into the remaining metallic dragon eggs to preserve their souls.
Aurumnus and Regia: The ancient king and queen of the gold dragons. Ruling from Auralastican, Aurumnus frequently visits Ansalon disguised as a human traveler, while Regia guides the draconic Council of Five.
Pyrite: The legendary great wyrm who protected Huma during the Third Dragon War. He famously wandered Ansalon in the guise of the ancient, golden-netted dragon accompanying Fizban the Fabulous and Tasslehoff Burrfoot during the War of the Lance!
Quallathon: A mature adult gold dragon who served as the glorious, flying mount for Laurana, the Golden General, leading the forces of Good to victory over the dragonarmies.
Suhnrysanti (Sunrise): The brave young wyrm who partnered with Ulin Majere, teaching him to become Krynn’s first and only Dragon Mage. Sunrise later fought heroically at the Second Battle of Sanction during the climax of the War of Souls.
