In celebrating the 40th anniversary of Dragonlance, I wanted to share the story of Dragonlance and its impact on my life. My story with Dragonlance began about twenty years ago roughly, the first book in the franchise I ever read was Children of the Plains by Paul Thompson and Tonya Cook. I loved the book and went on to finish the whole trilogy. This introduction to the Dragonlance books not only ignited a love of books, but also a love of writing. I went on to start my own writing and create several short novels. These short novels laid the foundation for a fantasy world that I’ve continued to build up over years since.
This led me to reaching out to Margaret Weis online back in 2012(ish), I asked her what advice she would give an aspiring writer like me. She thanked me for reaching out and was happy to hear from a fan of Dragonlance. Her advice to me, the latter part I doubt anyone would expect, was to keep up with my writing but don’t quit my day job. Sound advice without question, I did keep my day job while I continued to refine my writing and build the world that I imagined. To this day, I’ve continued my passion for writing; even hosting a D&D game set in the very world I had been creating. Now I’ve written my first full length fantasy novel and started the process of editing. I plan to publish within the year. The completion of my first draft was one of the proudest moments of my life and I look forward to sharing what I’ve created with others.
I have Dragonlance to thank for my passion for writing and storytelling. Without it, I don’t know if I would’ve become a writer or have had the determination to get my book done. As I continue on this path in my life, I still look to Dragonlance as I write. Dragonlance has been my inspiration, each author serving as a guide. I hope everyone has a great time celebrating the 40th anniversary of this amazing franchise. I myself look forward to reading the final book of the destinies trilogy later this year.
It’s unrelated to the story, but I’d also like to share a favorite Dragonlance moment I had during a D&D game. In D&D I got the opportunity to play a Bozak draconian named Krith’k. During one session, he cast the spell draconic spirit to summon a spirit in the form of Queen Tahkisis’ dragon form. So far this was my most epic moment playing the character, it was an awesome thing as a fan of Dragonlance that the DM let me do.
