Game Setup
Last time on Dragons of Despair: The heroes charmed Sar, a Glup clan Aghar (Gully Dwarf) to take them to the dragon, but as her Highbulp king Phudge knows everything about the ruins of Xak Tsaroth, and the dragon is big, scary, and mean, so she planned on taking them to Phudge. She led them to an old sewer pipe the Aghar used to traverse the many ruined levels of the city and Riverwind had a sense of deja vu. They crawled through a tilted side street with ruined buildings on either side and wound up in an old spectral minion library. They were offered one question by the scholar Ossamis who has been trapped until he answers it. They asked where the dragon was, and since he has been trapped in this library, he is unaware of the dragon and told them so, then he gratefully left to the Gate of Souls. They proceeded to the tax collector clerk’s office who had been waiting for Kathal to pay his taxes before they moved on. Tasslehoff tried to pay with gold from the scholar’s char rather than the standard clay Tsarothian Culli, and the clerk ordered the guards to kill him for false payment. With Kathal dead, they left for the Gate of Souls. The heroes revived Tas and investigated the office. They found rotting sacks of Culli in the back room and two skeletons who appeared to be shoveling it into alcoves titled Treasury and Taxes. Flint inadvertently stepped through a Dimension Door and found himself in the ruins of the Treasury Tower, and the other heroes soon followed. They see that the ruins of this once great city are perched precariously on the cliff over the New Sea and it is riddled not just with Gully Dwarves, but spirits of the former citizens of the city and the dragonmen. With rivers of water making the environment dangerous, and the crumbling city all around them will they ever find the Disks of Mishakal and return knowledge of the gods to Krynn?
About DL1 Dragons of Despair
You stand on the road east of Solace, tired from five years of adventuring, from a fruitless search for lost clerical magic. You know the old proverb that claims “You must return to find what you left to seek,” but the saying never really made sense. Soon, however, it will.
For the world of Krynn is not the same: refugees stream out of the northernmost human lands, telling horrible tales. An invading army has burned their villages and put their families and friends to the sword. Among these stories you hear even darker rumors-that older evils, the dragons themselves, have returned to the world, for new and more terrible purposes.
“Dragon of Despair” is the first in TSR’s series of Dragonlance adventures for use with the AD&D game system. Your players will adventure in the world of Krynn, visit strange places such as Haven or ruined Xak Tsaroth, and encounter the bizarre draconians and spectral minions. They can play the modules as a set of separate adventures or as a great quest that spans the entire Dragonlance story.
An adventure for characters Level 4-6.
Written by Tracy Hickman.
