Game Setup
Last time on Dragons of Despair: The heroes returned to Solace after five years of searching for evidence of the old gods. They returned exhausted and changed, each in their own way. On the outskirts of the town, they were ambushed by hobgoblins. A Fewmaster Toede ordered his men to claim the blue crystal staff from the group, and returned to town. The heroes fought off and allowed some of the hobgoblins to flee. They went directly to the Inn of the Last Home and met two plainsmen with a blue crystal staff that healed Caramon on its own accord. The two groups learned about the Seekers from Haven searching for the staff, and the plainsmen who found it, trying to discover its secrets. Believing it has something to do with the old gods, they joined up together. They were told about three possible locations which may help them discover the secrets of the staff. Haven, the seat of regional power in Abanasinia, Darken Wood, the feared forest between Solace and Haven, and Xak Tsaroth, the ruined city on the other side of the Eastwall Mountains. They decided to head to Xak Tsaroth and had a surprisingly uneventful journey through Que-Kiri and the great plains. What they learned was that fires have been seen in the north, rumors of demons and armies are rampant, and they saw miles of the plains burnt around the plainsmen’s home of Que-Shu. Will the heroes discover the fires source? What does it have to do with the staff, if anything? And what awaits them on the far side of the Forbidden mountains?
About DL1 Dragons of Despair
You stand on the road east of Solace, tired from five years of adventuring, from a fruitless search for lost clerical magic. You know the old proverb that claims “You must return to find what you left to seek,” but the saying never really made sense. Soon, however, it will.
For the world of Krynn is not the same: refugees stream out of the northernmost human lands, telling horrible tales. An invading army has burned their villages and put their families and friends to the sword. Among these stories you hear even darker rumors-that older evils, the dragons themselves, have returned to the world, for new and more terrible purposes.
“Dragon of Despair” is the first in TSR’s series of Dragonlance adventures for use with the AD&D game system. Your players will adventure in the world of Krynn, visit strange places such as Haven or ruined Xak Tsaroth, and encounter the bizarre draconians and spectral minions. They can play the modules as a set of separate adventures or as a great quest that spans the entire Dragonlance story.
An adventure for characters Level 4-6.
Written by Tracy Hickman.
